With more than 38 different Acts dealing with employment law, there are a wide range of issues which employers simply have to be aware of when recruiting staff. This course has been specifically designed to deal with all aspects of recruiting staff, preparing a written contract  of employment, or a written statement of employment (as required by law) and compiling a staff handbook to ensure that employers comply with their legal requirements and minimise their exposure to possible litigation. Many employees don’t have a written contract of employment, or a written statement of terms of employment, and even where a staff handbook exists; it may be seriously out of date, or simply inadequate.

This course will give you guidance on how to prepare these important documents and what they should contain. The course will also explain why every employer should have a robust staff handbook and will guide you in the preparation of a staff handbook.

Most awards against employers arise, not through any deliberate wrongdoing on the part of the employer, but as a result of the failure of the employer to comply with legal requirements, or to follow prescribed procedures. If your company doesn’t currently have a staff handbook, or if you simply need to update your staff handbook, this course will prove an invaluable aid and may save you from costly and possibly damaging litigation.

The following topics will be covered on the day:

Recruitment of Staff

  • Advertising the position – what the advert should and should not say
  • Identifying the position and setting out the requirements such as salary, training, schemes etc.
  • Interviewing the applicants
  • What to say and what not to say
  • The question of references and how to deal with them
  • Offering the position

  • The terms and conditions of the contract
